Neem Oil for Animal Care and Pest Control

Neem oil is extracted from most parts of the Azadirachta Indica tree, but the highest concentration for cleaning and insecticidal use is in the seeds. The effective compound for insect control is Azadirachin, an appropriate name for the tree.

Many Ways to Use Neem Oil
Used as directed in a 1-10 parts solution in water it is not too bad. However, there are some natural aromatics that can transform the odor, such as rosemary, dill or basil. Just use these fresh pureed and strained or infused in the water you use to dilute the neem.
Any animal shampoo can be turned into neem shampoo by adding some neem seed oil, (about 1 Neem Oil part to 20 parts shampoo).
If you are making your own shampoo, the quality of the ingredients is important, so don’t use bargain basement stuff. Neem oil shampoo for animals controls fleas, ticks, some forms of mange veterinary care is needed for demodectic mange, but neem helps the healing process and prevents recurrence), most mites and other biting pests.
Neem Spray or Salve
Pets and livestock can be sprayed with neem oil as an insect repellent. You can make a spray using 1 part neem to 20 parts water, and combining neem with a high quality emulsifier like a mild liquid soap. It makes a great ointment for irritations, inflammation, and healing injuries. The insecticidal and repellent qualities also protect the animal from further predation.
Neem Animal Shampoo after Parasite Infestations
Bathing with a neem animal shampoo is of course also an excellent way to discourage fleas and ticks, and to clean up after mange or ringworm. Make sure you leave the shampoo in for several minutes (as long as your animal will tolerate it) before rinsing. Do this two or three times a week. That usually does the job. Adding Conditioner with neem will assist with any skin conditions.
If you have a severe case of anything you may want to try pure neem oil. Don’t use it undiluted, though, especially if your pet has cracked, open skin, oozing sores etc. This would be a great time to use the salve or spray. Then massage the oil mixture into the skin. You can apply it several times a day on problem spots.
Injuries and Skin Conditions
For hot spots like moist eczema, or to treat demodectic mange, you can increase the concentration to a 1:1 ratio. Some people do use 100% pure neat neem oil in those cases. Don’t leave the pure oil on the skin for more than 48 hours, or the animal may develop an irritation. Also monitor the skin, and if there is any reaction, wash the oil of immediately. For tendonitis, sprains and other inflammatory injuries apply the ointment several times daily and cover with a waterproof bandage or plastic wrap. The warmth will help the healing and keep the muscles relaxed.
